Key Objectives:
- Regulation and Safety: Ensure the safety of road users, including vehicles, drivers, and pedestrians.
- Efficient Transport System: Facilitate the smooth functioning of road transport through better infrastructure and services.

Promoting Green Transport: Encourage the adoption of environment-friendly transportation options like electric vehicles (EVs).
- Revenue Generation: Through taxes, vehicle registration fees, fines, and other sources, generate revenue for the state.
Major Functions of the Transport Department:
- Registration of Vehicles: All types of motor vehicles must be registered with the department before they are driven on public roads. This includes issuance of Registration Certificates (RC).
- Issuance of Driving Licenses: The department is responsible for issuing driving licenses for various categories of vehicles, after conducting necessary tests.
- Renewals and Transfers: It manages the renewal process of licenses and registration, and oversees the transfer of ownership of vehicles.
- Traffic Enforcement: The department enforces traffic rules and regulations through road safety programs, policing, and regular checks on vehicles.
- Road Safety Initiatives: This includes creating awareness, training programs, and setting up road safety awareness campaigns to reduce road accidents.
- Public Transport Services: The department oversees buses, auto-rickshaws, taxis, and other public transport systems to ensure that they are well-regulated, affordable, and accessible.
- Regional Transport Offices (RTO): Maharashtra has several RTOs in different districts that cater to vehicle registration, licensing, and other transport-related services.
- Road Maintenance: The department is involved in the development and maintenance of the road network in the state, including highways, rural roads, and urban infrastructure.
- Building Transport Corridors: Developing and modernizing roads, bridges, and highways to facilitate the efficient movement of goods and people.
- Collection of Taxes: It is responsible for the collection of road taxes and registration fees, which contribute to the state’s revenue.
- Road Tax on Vehicles: Different vehicles (private, commercial) are subject to a road tax which varies based on factors like type of vehicle, engine capacity, etc.
- EV Policy: The department has introduced policies to promote the use of electric vehicles in Maharashtra, offering incentives for electric vehicle buyers and infrastructure development for charging stations.
